Is Rachel Wacholder the MVP of the AVP?
September 28, 2006
After surveying several top AVP players, five men's and four women's players were identified as the favorites to win the 2006 MVP of the AVP award. The MVP will be announced on October 5th at the AVP Award Ceremony. The five men, listed in alphabetical order, are Phil Dalhausser, Jake Gibb, Mike Lambert, Stein Metzger and Todd Rogers. The four women, listed in alphabetical order, are Misty May-Treanor, Rachel Wacholder, Kerri Walsh and Elaine Youngs.
Holly Stein
Rachel Wacholder
Rachel Wacholder was the tour's best defensive player and most improved player in 2005. She even garnered consideration for the 2005 MVP. And Wacholder was better in 2006.
Wacholder won two events in 2006 including the Hermosa Beach Open, one of the most prestigious events on tour, and made eight finals appearances. And that does not include the AVP Las Vegas Gods and Goddesses of the Beach tournament where Wacholder was selected by Kerri Walsh as her playing partner in the final. Walsh and Wacholder would go on to defeat Misty May-Treanor and Elaine Youngs.
In fact, Wacholder has appeared in more final fours and finals than any other players on tour beside May-Treanor and Walsh over the past two seasons.
The biggest news to hit the 2006 AVP Crocs Tour was the splitting of Wacholder and her former partner Youngs. The duo had won five championships together in a span of 23 tournament starts. The former partners faced off three times at the end of the 2006 season, with Wacholder winning each in three games.
With the pressure on to earn an invite to the Lake Tahoe Best of the Beach where a team's best six finishes were used to determine invitations, Wacholder and new partner Jen Boss qualified for Tahoe in just four regular season events. Overall the new duo played in five team events finishing second twice, third twice and fifth once.
Statistically, Wacholder held steady in two categories and improved dramatically in two other categories. Wacholder upped her dig total by 10 from 978 to 988, increased her ace total by one from 53 to 54 in 2006.
Wacholder made big improvements in both blocks and kill percentage. In 2005, Wacholder finished 30th in total blocks with 27. She nearly doubled that in 2006 finishing in 22nd in total blocks with 45. Wacholder also improved her kill percentage 11 points raising it from .419 to .430.
Wacholder is clearly one of the front runners for MVP of the AVP.

Team USA heads to Mexico's Azteca Cup
By USA Volleyball
The U.S. Women's National Team will go for the gold at the Azteca Cup in Mexico Sept.24-29.
The U.S. Women's National Team will compete in the Azteca Cup Sept. 24-29 at Monterrey, Mexico. The event was a late addition to Team USA's schedule.
The Azteca Cup, in its first year of existence, is an eight-team tournament broken into two pools advancing to the classification round. The U.S. is grouped in Pool B with Canada, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Pool A consists of host Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Peru.
The U.S. opens against Puerto Rico on Sept. 24, followed by preliminary matches against Canada on Sept. 25 and Cuba on Sept. 26.
The Team USA roster for the Azteca Cup will be a mixture of players from the senior and junior national teams, along with players who competed and trained with the national team earlier this year.
The women's national training team includes Elisabeth Bachman, Sarah Drury, Jane Collymore, Sam Tortorello and Katie Olsovsky.
Jennifer Doris, Zoe Garrett and Juliann Faucette earned gold medals at the NORCECA Continental Women's Junior Championship (U-20) while competing on the U.S. Women's Junior National team in August at Monterrey, Mexico.
Erin Virtue and Jamie Dekiewiet, who competed on the USA Tour of Italy and against Poland this past spring, round out the U.S. roster for the Azteca Cup.
Tom Hogan will serve as the head coach while Tom Pingel will have double-duty as assistant coach and team manager. "Jenny" Lang Ping, the U.S. women's national team coach, will remain in Colorado Springs to train the remainder of the U.S. squad members who are not on the Azteca Cup roster.
Bachman, Drury, Collymore and Tortorello all competed at the Pan American Cup, which the U.S. used to qualify for the 2007 World Grand Prix. Collymore was inserted on the 2006 World Grand Prix roster after the first week of preliminary matches to replace an injured Ogonna Nnamani. Collymore will be the only U.S. player to have competed in the Pan American Cup, World Grand Prix and the Azteca Cup. The Azteca Cup marks the first outside competition for Olsovsky since the U.S. tour of Italy in March.
"It is important for the players competing at the Azteca Cup to gain game experience," Lang Ping said. "How well the national team players do in this tournament will help make decisions for the final 12-player World Championship roster. In addition, the high school players on the roster will also have a chance to gain international experience."
Bachman currently averages 3.03 points per set during the 2006 season. Drury has played in 27 sets this season. Collymore has compiled 34 points this season in primarily a back-up role. Tortorello entered six sets at the Pan American Cup, her first international experience on the U.S. senior national team. Olsovsky averaged 3.00 points per set on the tour of Italy, including 60 kills in 23 sets.
Doris, Faucette and Garrett are familiar with Monterrey and the host facility, Nuevo Leon Gym. The trio helped the U.S. capture gold at the NORCECA Continental Women's Junior Championship (U-20) held in August in the same arena. Doris and Faucette turned in 11 points apiece in the five-set championship victory over Dominican Republic, while Garrett added six points in the title match. All three players are taking a break from high school to compete for Team USA.
Dekiewiet played in 24 sets in Team USA's tour of Italy and at Chicago in a contest against Poland on May 26. She recorded 40 points with 33 kills. Virtue entered five sets on the tour of Italy.
The U.S. recently completed its second tournament of the summer with a seventh-place finish in the annual million-dollar World Grand Prix. Team USA, which finished 4-5 with four losses against teams ranked among the top six teams in the world, competed in preliminary round-robin weekends in Poland, Macau and Thailand.
The U.S. completes its 2006 schedule at the World Championships in Japan beginning Oct. 31. Team USA plays pool match against Kazakhstan on Oct. 31, Netherlands on Nov. 1, Cameroon on Nov. 3, Brazil on Nov. 4 and Puerto Rico on Nov. 5.

Breakers capture Dave Mohs OC Tourney
Laguna Beach Rides Duo to Volleyball Tournament Title
By Lauren Peterson, Times Staff WriterSeptember 19, 2006
Zoe Garrett and Dana Hutchinson provided the Laguna Beach girls' volleyball team with an effective 1-2 punch Monday night, and the Breakers needed both to finally knock out North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.Hutchinson collected 17 kills, 10 digs and four blocks and Garrett had 12 kills, three blocks and an ace as the Breakers rallied to defeat Harvard-Westlake, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12, in the championship match of the Dave Mohs tournament Monday night at Huntington Beach Edison.
"We didn't play our best, but we pulled it out. That's the most important thing," Hutchinson said. "I think we worked really hard and we deserved what we got."In a match that was tight throughout and could have gone either way, Hutchinson and Garrett demonstrated why the Breakers (9-0) are getting used to things swinging their way. The duo was selected the tournament's co-most valuable players."We showed that when it gets hard, we have the ability to fight back," said Hutchinson, a 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter who had five kills and two blocks in the second game to help the Breakers rebound after losing an early 4-1 edge in the game.Garrett, a 6-2 senior middle blocker who had five kills and two blocks in the second game, served an ace in front of Harvard-Westlake libero Rachel Yorke to end the second with an exclamation point. With Harvard-Westlake leading, 5-2, in the third game after an impressive spike by Audrey Eichler knocked Hutchinson to the floor, Laguna Beach benefited from a service error and four consecutive attacking errors by the Wolverines that gave the Breakers a 7-5 edge.Harvard-Westlake (7-2), the Southern Section Division III-AA runner-up in 2005, tied the match twice more, at 9-9 and 12-12. The Wolverines, however, never took the lead as Laguna Beach won the tournament for the fourth time. The title was the Breakers' first since 1991, when current AVP women's tour pro Rachel Wacholder was named most valuable player.Hutchinson, a dynamic emotional leader, and Garrett, a soft-spoken but hard-hitting player, aren't on that level yet.But they are gaining reputations as clutch players."They have the ability to make plays when they need to," Laguna Beach Coach Lance Stewart said. The pair led the Breakers last season to the Division IV-AA semifinals, where they fell to eventual champion Los Angeles Marymount."I think, talent-wise, we're there. We just have to execute," Stewart said. "I think this tournament was good for us, just to get a lot of court time together."Garrett, a member of the 2005 U.S. youth national team who transferred from San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's last year and has committed to USC, had three kills, a block and two aces for the U.S. junior national team as it defeated the Dominican Republic in five games in the gold-medal match of the NORCECA Continental Women's Junior Championships in Monterrey, Mexico, in August."I think I'm a natural athlete, but I've worked at it too," Garrett said. "I want to make progress, and people know that I put in the work and I take volleyball seriously."Hutchinson is expected to be among the top recruits in the nation next season. She and Laguna Beach teammate Paige Obradovich won the 15-and-under division of the 2004 AAU/AVP Southern Pacific Championships."They give us a lot of options," Laguna Beach setter Mychaela Miller said. "I know I'll always have a hitter to go to no matter where I am on the court."
